SIKESTON -- The Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation has taken another step toward moving its central office complex from Portageville to Sikeston.

Joel Evans, DAEOC's executive director, announced the plans to the Sikeston City Council by speakerphone during the Council's regular monthly meeting Monday as part of request for Community Development Block Grant sponsorship.

A private private, not-for-profit community action agency, DAEOC needs sponsorship from a municipality for a CDBG application.

Serving Scott, New Madrid, Mississippi, Stoddard, Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties, by administering programs designed to combat poverty and provide economic opportunities in the Bootheel, DAEOC recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, Evans noted.

Evans said DAEOC officials decided to relocated central offices to Sikeston and over a year ago identified a building in Sikeston but could not afford at that time to purchase and remodel the facility.

With funding to expand existing and open new Early Head Start programs becoming available, DAEOC officials came up with the plan to open a facility housing a new Early Head Start program and administrative offices for DAEOC called "the Synergy Center" in Sikeston, Evans said, "because it would allow us to bring all of our programs in under one roof."
