Team will train to better handle individuals with mental health issues

SIKESTON -- A more caring approach successfully used by agencies to handle child abuse cases is now being applied to dealing with individuals suffering from mental health issues.

Local agencies have worked with Deborah Surface of Bootheel Counseling Services since this spring to establish a Crisis Intervention Team for the four-county area served by Bootheel Counseling, according to Capt. Jim McMillen of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, chair for the CIT committee.

"A Crisis Intervention Team deals with mental health incidents," McMillen said.
