SIKESTON -- Adoption might not be as difficult as you think -- and can could make the town look at lot nicer.

Employees of the city of Sikeston will meet Sunday afternoon for the first official litter pickup day for their newly adopted road, Linn Street, according to a Rhonda Council, an administrative assistant at City Hall.

"We are just trying get people aware of the program," Council said.

The city's Adopt-a-Road Litter Control program never really stopped being an option, Council said, but there wasn't a lot of participation in recent years.

Darren Martin, Street Division supervisor for Sikeston Department of Public Works, said the last Adopt-a-Street sign he remembers the city putting up before the two that went up Wednesday on Linn Street was for the Shady Acres Church of Christ.

"Three or four times a year they pick up trash all up and down Ables Road," Martin said.

Kathy Medley, an administrative assistant for the city of Sikeston, said they are hoping that city employees adopting Linn Street will "kind of kick-start" new participation in the program.

And it looks like the timing is right. Martin said he was asked on the morning before going out to put up the city's street adoption signs for information about adopting a road in memory of a parent.

"The Street Division will provide the bags and we'll put up signs with your name on it," he said. "And we will pick up the filled trash bags along the route."
