Kudos to our fall sports teams

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Portageville High School's Fall sports programs may be over with, but their quality of play and determination In all of the sports, there were some set backs, but many highlights. The coaches and the students participating should be commended for their efforts and examples they are setting for our future athletes.

Overall, the Fighting Bulldogs had a good season, ending up with a 6-4 record.

No doubt in my mind, that a couple of these boys, their playing time may be over with, but their action will be talked about for ever. Look at Don Hawkins, as of press time, he still holds the school's record in passing. In 1952, he set the state record for 1,492 yards passing. In 1953, he broke that record for 1,830 yards passing. His record may have been broken this season, but the final statistics were not available at press time.

For fall softball with such a young program, and to have two state trophies speaks volumes about the coaches and players on the programs they produce. Several of the softball team members has been named to the All-district team. Senior Tiffany Taylor broke her own state record in strike outs.

The Portageville Volleyball program also had a good season. They ended with a 15-12-2 overall record. No doubt next year, there will be a lot of growth and determination.

Now it is time to move forward to winter sports, basketball. Both boys and girls games will begin the first week of December. The boys first game is December 11 against Hayti, and the girls first home game is December 14 against Campbell.
