CHARLESTON, Mo. -- To reduce chronic diseases that affect the area, Mississippi County health care providers were recently awarded a Delta Regional Authority grant for over $500,000.

Grants are funded by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy which is housed within the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Since 2002, HRSA has partnered with the Delta Regional Authority to leverage funds to the Delta region using the Delta States Rural Development Network Grant Program.

Out of $10 million in grants, Mississippi County was one of 12 locations in the Delta region that received grant funding of $584,999, and will continue to receive that sum for the next three years.

According to Rachelle Johnson, Mississippi County Health Department administrator, these grants will serve the HRSA Region B counties, which include: Dunklin, Pemiscot, New Madrid, Mississippi, Scott, Stoddard, Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Madison, Perry, Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois and Washington.

"Our biggest goal is education and availability," said Johnson.
