Local leaders sharpen leadership skills at academy
SIKESTON -- Local community leaders polished their leadership skills through the Delta Leadership Institute Executive Academy, a Delta Regional Authority program.
Maude Harris, nutrition and health education specialist for University of Missouri Extension of Scott County in Benton and the southeast region; and Rachelle Johnson, administrator of Mississippi County Health Department in Charleston, were two graduates of 50 Delta leaders to receive the program certificate.
"The Executive Academy is a year-long leadership development program for regional leaders that prepares them to collaborate and address the most-pressing issues of the Delta region," said Amanda Richardson, Delta Leadership Institute director, in an e-mail response.
Participants submit an application, then "each of the eight governors and the federal co-chairman nominate community leaders for the program," Richardson said.
According to the DRA website, participants attend six sessions across the Delta and in Washington, D.C., where they discuss issues facing the region, including: public health, education, policy and government, transportation, small business and entrepreneurship, culture and tourism, workforce training and economic development.
