CAPE GIRADEAU, Mo. - Seven varsity volleyball teams were among the participants at the 52-team Dig for Life Challenge Friday and Saturday at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

The Malden Green Wave (13-1-1) took home the top prize in the black division.

Malden beat Puxico 25-15, 25-20, beat Cooter 25-8, 25-13 and beat Viburnum 25-17, 25-24 to finish 6-0 in pool play. Malden split Twin Rivers 21-25, 25-18 in its pool play challenge match. Malden beat Clarkton 25-7, 25-13 in the first round of the gold bracket, beat Kennett 25-13, 25-14 in a gold bracket quarterfinal, beat Hazelwood West 28-26, 25-13 in a gold bracket semifinal and beat Viburnum 26-24, 25-21 in the gold bracket championship.

The Kennett Indians (9-3-2) advanced to the quarterfinals of the gold bracket. Kennett beat Zalma 25-17, 25-22, beat Richland 25-22, 25-14 and split Scott City 25-24, 23-25 to finish 5-1 in pool play. Kennett split Oak Ridge 23-25, 25-11 in it pool play challenge match. Kennett beat Meadow Heights 17-25, 25-12, 25-20 in the first round of the gold bracket before dropping its gold bracket quarterfinal to Malden 13-25, 14-25.

Campbell advanced to the first round of the gold bracket. Campbell split Oak Ridge 25-22, 19-25, split Ellington 25-21, 22-25 and beat Oran 25-17, 25-24 to finish 4-2 in pool play. Campbell split Hazelwood West 25-19, 18-25 in its pool play challenge match. Viburnum beat Campbell 19-25, 28-26, 25-21 in the first round of the gold bracket.

Clarkton (1-9-1) advanced to the first round of the gold bracket. Clarkton split South Iron 25-12, 24-25, lost to Hazelwood West 22-25, 12-25 and beat Bell City 25-13, 25-13 to finish 3-3 in pool play. Clarkton lost its pool play challenge match to Cape Central 21-25, 16-25. Malden beat Clarkton 25-7, 25-13 in the first round of the gold bracket.

Southland advanced to the quarterfinals of the silver bracket. Southland lost to Greenville 14-25, 15-25, lost to Portageville 24-25, 15-25 and lost to Cape Central 19-25, 17-25 to finish 0-6 in pool play. Southland lost to Oran 19-25, 19-25 in its pool play challenge match. Southland beat Holcomb 25-14, 26-28, 25-22 in the first round of the silver bracket before falling to Cooter 19-25, 21-25 in a silver bracket quarterfinal.

Senath-Hornersville (5-6-1) advanced to the first round of the silver bracket. Senath-Hornersville lost to Meadow Heights 12-25, 19-25, lost to Twin Rivers 18-25, 24-25 and beat Charleston 25-15, 25-21 to finish 2-4 in pool play. Senath-Hornersville split Cooter 10-25, 25-22 in its pool play challenge match. South Pemiscot beat Senath-Hornersville 25-12, 25-22 in the first round of the silver bracket.

Holcomb (1-11) advanced to the first round of the silver bracket. Holcomb lost to Clearwater 18-25, 16-25, lost to Oran 15-21, 21-25 and lost to Caruthersville 19-25, 18-25 to finish 0-6 in pool play. Holcomb lost to Zalma 15-25, 22-25 in its pool play challenge match. Southland beat Holcomb 25-14, 26-28, 25-22 in the first round of the silver bracket.

Editor’s Note: Bloomfield beat Jackson 25-23, 25-14 in gold bracket championship game in the red division.
