Tuesday, September 19, 2017

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston American Legion Cotton Carnival Parade, set for Sept. 30, will be honoring Purple Heart recipients.

Line up for the parade will begin at 8 a.m. and all high school bands will meet in the grass area in front of the Sikeston Senior High campus.

Youth floats will line up on Courtney Street while adult floats will line up on E. Gladys Street. Politicians will congregate on Matthews Street (Democrats) and Kathleen Street (Republicans). All other floats and vehicle will start from the Field House parking lot or line up on Ables Road.

There will be no one allowed on Greer Street as it will be closed to all traffic but American Legion officials at 8 a.m.

No personal vehicles, motorcycles or ATVs are allowed in the parade. The only motorcycles will be the Legion Riders and SEMO Shriners.

City ordinances prevent the throwing of candy, however, participants are allowed to walk to the curb and drop it at the feet of the viewers. Also city ordinances are in place for loud and explicit music. Participants will be asked to turn it down or be removed from the festivities.

If a truck plays music for children walking behind, please keep it at a normal level. There will be high school bands being judged so sound systems are asked to be at a reasonable level.

Any Purple Heart Recipients that want to participate in the parade should contact Jerry Barnhouse at 471-1070. Purple Heart Recipients will meet at Pine and Malone Street at 9:30 a.m.
