MARSTON, Mo. -- A formal announcement of the opening of a new aluminum smelter in New Madrid County is planned for Friday afternoon at the St. Jude Industrial Park.

According to a news release from State Rep. Don Rone, Magnitude 7 Metals is currently hiring staff for the new aluminum smelter which could total close to 400 new jobs for the area. The smelter is located at the former Noranda Aluminum Smelter.

"This project has been two long years in the making," said Rone, R-Portageville. "So many people have dedicated their time and efforts to make this happen, and I could not be happier for the people of the Bootheel. New industry is coming to our area because our people are hard workers and driven to do their best."

A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday with congressman Jason Smith, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens in attendance as well as state representatives, senators and representatives from Magnitude 7 Metals. The event is open to the public.

"I am so excited to see this smelter positively affect our communities," Rone said. "The people of the Bootheel have always been resilient and had an undeniable work ethic. I'm proud that so many of our friends and neighbors will benefit from Magnitude 7 opening their doors in the Bootheel."
