Hazel Hawks

Hazel Hawks, of Portageville, was born January 31, 1920, in Portageville, to Cecil Slider and Maggie Mae Sutton Slider, and departed this life Tuesday, April 17, 2018, in the Portageville Nursing Facility, at the age of 98 years.

Hazel was a graduate of North Pemiscot High School, and then attended Southeast Missouri State University. She taught school for a while then after marriage, she truly loved the farming life. She married James Henry Hawks January 31, 1946, in Caruthersville, Mo.

She was truly a giving soul. She was always cooking, making quilts or sewing for everyone in town. She also loved gardening, and before her health declined, she was very active in her church, First Baptist Church in Portageville, belonging to the Keenagers, and assisting any way she could.

Preceding Hazel in death were her parents, Cecil and Maggie Mae Slider; her husband, James Henry Hawks (April 20, 1983); her children, Joyce Thomas and James Hawks; her brothers, Robert, Woodrow, Henry, Louis and Harvey; one sister, Viola; and son-in-law, Lewis Lechenette.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Diane Lechenette of Portageville; grandchildren, Leslie Lechenette, Leann Lechenette, Matt Hawks, James William Hawks; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Lechenette, Alex Hawks, Aiden Hawks; sister, Elsie Huey of Portageville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Portageville. Burial followed in Portageville Cemetery.
