Rotary Club to honor residents who help community
SIKESTON — In every community there are those whose volunteer work helps better the community. The Sikeston Rotary Club now intends to honor those people who help better the Sikeston community.
Beginning this month, the Rotary Club will begin giving the Sikeston Area Community “Service Above Self Award.”
“The award will be given to anybody that does outstanding work,” said Ken Rubenacker of the Sikeston Rotary Club. “The grandmother that helps in kindergarten with reading, someone that organizes work project, that type of person.”
The official motto of Rotary International is “Service Above Self” and the “Service Above Self” award has long been a designation assigned to Rotary Club members who perform selfless deeds leading to the betterment of local and/or international communities. Over the past few years, the Sikeston Rotary Club has presented “Service Above Self” awards to both a male and female graduate of Sikeston High School and Sikeston Junior High in recognition of both outstanding scholastic achievement and contributions made to the Sikeston community.
With the new award, the Rotary Club hopes to give recognition to many of the communities selfless citizens who tirelessly perform volunteer works which lead to the betterment of the community and it’s residents.
The first award will be presented at the Rotary Club’s Oct. 23 meeting and then will be given quarterly.
“At this point, the Rotarians are the only one’s nominating but we are hoping that people will begin making nominations,” Rubenacker said. “They will have to be willing to provide some background on the person they are nominating with their service projects and activities they are involved with.”
Should local citizens wish to nominate an individual for consideration as a potential recipient of the award, they may do so by contacting any Sikeston Rotary Club member or by calling Rubenacker at (573) 703-7006.
