Ready, set, shop! Stores plan ‘Black Friday’ deals through the weekend

Tuesday, November 20, 2018

SIKESTON — With the countdown to the unofficial start to the holiday shopping season — Black Friday — underway, many retailers have already started offering their sales and promotions.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 174 million U.S. consumers went shopping online or in-store last year over Thanksgiving weekend, which spans Thanksgiving Day through to Cyber Monday.

Last year, American shoppers spent a record $5 billion online in the space of 24 hours. US retailers generated $7.9 billion in online sales from both Thanksgiving and Black Friday in 2017, which was up 17.9 percent from the year before, according to research by Adobe Analytics.

“Whether it’s heading to the stores after finishing their turkey or going online on Cyber Monday, consumers will be shopping all weekend and retailers will be ready to meet the demand,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said.

The survey found that of those planning to shop during the long holiday weekend 21 percent (34 million) plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, but Black Friday will remain the busiest day with 71 percent (116 million) planning to shop. Forty-one percent (67 million) are expected to shop on Small Business Saturday, and 78 percent of those say they will do so specifically to support small businesses. On Sunday, 20 percent (32 million) are expected to shop. The shopping weekend will wrap up on Cyber Monday, when 46 percent (75 million) are expected to take advantage of online bargains.

“Consumers will be scouring through retailers’ ads to make sure they are getting the best deal possible,” Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “Although sales will remain an important factor, shoppers want good quality and want to be able to find what they’re looking for.”

To better help with preparation for Thanksgiving day, Black Friday and weekend shopping, today’s Standard Democrat features advertisements by local and national companies offering specials on clothing, toys, electronics and other big-ticket items.
