Under A Shepherds Care

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

In my office there is an old window that my wife and I have repurposed as wall art. On that window are the words, “The Lord is my Shepherd”. It has been a new addition to my office décor in the past few months. I purposely have placed it there so I am continually reminded that I am not alone in what can sometimes feel like a very lonely world. In fact, the good news is that we each can have a shepherd in Jesus.

I love the imagery of the 23rd Psalm. You probably remember those words, but just in case you don’t, here they are:

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever” Psalms 23 NIV

These words paint such a peaceful serene picture in my mind. Who wouldn’t cherish a relaxing stay in a beautiful meadow listening to the soft sounds of a quiet stream? Sign me up for that vacation spot. What a great picture of the peacefulness that comes when one has a shepherd watching over them! However, in these words, there is so much more. Encompassed in those words are the gems that are available to all who depend on the Good Shepherd.

When we depend on Jesus, He will care for all our needs. When we depend on Jesus, we will be restored from whatever has broken us. When we depend on Jesus there is a special kind of peace we can experience. The Bible calls it a peace that passes all understanding. When we depend on Jesus, He will guide our paths in special ways. When we depend on Jesus, we can face, without fear, all of life’s great difficulties. When we depend on Jesus, He provides for us with great blessings. When we depend on Jesus, our souls overflow with joy and hope.

As one can clearly see putting our dependence upon the Good Shepherd brings us a host of amazing benefits. I am more than certain the listing of those benefits could include many more items because a shepherd is all things to those under his care.

If by chance you are feeling kind of alone, then I would tell you that you are really not because there is a shepherd that desires to be with you. Let me encourage you to seek out the Good Shepherd for your life. If you already have a relationship with this shepherd, I want to encourage you to continually be aware of the Great Shepherd’s presence as we travel the paths He has for us.
