Caruthersville teen killed in one-car accident Sunday

HOMESTOWN, Mo. — A Caruthersville, Mo., teenager was killed in a one-car accident Sunday evening in Pemiscot County.

At 6:25 p.m., a vehicle driven by Hunter D. Shelton, 18, of Caruthersville, was traveling northbound on Route B, two miles south of Homestown when it ran off the roadway, struck a ditch and ejected three of the passengers.

Shelton was flown to St. Bernard Hospital in Blytheville, Ark., with moderate injuries.

Passengers Kira Burkeen, 15, and Carson Mann, 16, both of Caruthersville and Lindsey Posey, 16, of Wardell, Mo. were taken by ambulance to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Mo. Burkeen was then flown to Great Rivers Medical Center in Blytheville and was pronounced dead by Mississippi County, Ark., coroner Mike Godsey at 9:27 p.m. Burkeen’s death is the 26th fatality in Troop E in 2019.

Mann and Posey both received moderate injuries.
