SIKESTON — Eva “Lois” Matthews, age 92, a resident of Sikeston, died Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Lois was born July 2, 1927, in Kuttawa, Ky., to Edgar and Anna E. White Hammond. She has lived most of her life in Sikeston where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She loved children and babysat in her home for many years. She was known for her warm hospitality; she enjoyed participating in activities with a group of lifelong friends known as “Bingo Club.”

On Oct. 9, 1943, she married John C. Matthews Sr. who preceded her in death in 2007.

Loving survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Harry Philip of Jackson, Mo.; one son, Rodney L. Matthews of Sikeston; one brother, Joe Hammond of Lancaster, Calif.; one grandson, Matthew D. Wiethop of Cape Girardeau; one granddaughter, Martha Ann Stallings of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Catherine and Zachary Stallings of Colorado Springs; also many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, John Clay Matthews Jr.; and one grandson, John Clay “Jayce” Matthews III; also three brothers and three sisters.

Private family visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2020, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston followed by graveside services at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston. Jennifer Moxley, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sikeston, will officiate.

Interment will follow under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston.
