Tuesday, July 7, 2020

At 11:43 p.m. Monday members of the Portageville Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire on East Fifth Street in Portageville. Engine 1 and Ladder 1 responded. Upon arrival fire personnel found a single story home with with fire engulfing about 70 percent of the home, primarily from the rear. Due to the construction of the home and it’s roof type firefighters faced a challenging area just after midnight and at 12:45 a.m. the fire was marked 90% contained and a second alarm was sent out for more manpower. Still faced with many building obstacles, firefighters were not able to complete overhaul until about 5 a.m. Tuesday. The City of Portageville brought an excavator to help demolish portions of the house to clear hotspots. All firefighters cleared the scene at around 10 a.m. At the time of the fire there was nobody living in the residence and there were no injuries. The home was a total loss and there was slight damage to a neighbor’s fence.
