Kelly moves to distance learning; cases still high locally

The coronavirus continues to wreak havoc locally as Scott County R-4 (Kelly) Schools transitioned to distance learning Tuesday.

In a letter to parents, Kelly administrators said there are 180 students currently quarantined with an additional 25 members who have been placed in quarantine. Several others are awaiting test results.

Due to the high numbers, the district will have distance learning through the rest of the week with high school and middle school students using the week for make-ups, retesting and extra credit. Elementary students have assignments sent by packets through Google Classroom.

As many schools transition to Christmas break after Friday, positive cases around the area are still high.

The Scott County Health Department reported 40 new positive COVID-19 cases and two deaths since Friday. One death was a resident in their 60s and the other a resident in their 70s. The deaths mark 50 who have died since the pandemic began in March.

Currently there are 802 active cases in the county with 2,376 recoveries.

Mississippi County has 31 new positive cases with 106 active cases in the county, an increase of 22 from Friday. There have been 13 deaths related to the virus.

There are 208 active cases at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston, one more since Friday.

The New Madrid County Health Department last reported 78 active cases on Saturday with 1,579 out of quarantine with 29 deaths.

In Stoddard County, 55 new positive cases have been reported since Friday with 45 on Monday and 10 over the weekend. To date there are 130 active cases and 55 deaths with 2,282 recoveries.

An additional death was reported in Cape Girardeau County Monday, the 93rd since March. Currently there are 1,471 active cases an increase of 66 since Sunday and 5,177 cases have been resolved, 63 more than Sunday.

Pemiscot County has 45 active virus cases with 17 hospitalized. There has been 24 deaths and 1,295 released from isolation.

In Dunklin County there are 97 active cases with 2,292 recoveries and 18 deaths.
