Long-term care facilities begin getting vaccine as number of daily cases drop

Residents and staff of long-term care facilities in Missouri began receiving the vaccine for COVID-19 on Monday, as the state moves into the second phase of inoculations.

CVS Health and Walgreens are administering the vaccinations at skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. While less than 1% of the country’s population lives in long-term care facilities, as of Dec. 24 those in long-term care facilities accounted for 38% of US COVID-19 deaths.

Meanwhile, Missouri’s number of daily cases continues to drop since the state’s seven-day averaged peaked at 4,723 on Nov. 20. The state’s seven-day average of cases was 1,910 on Tuesday morning with an average of eight deaths per day.

Locally, Scott County has seen just 62 new positive cases in the last week with seven recoveries. However, in the last week there were four deaths related to the virus. One person was in their 60s, one in their 70s and two in the 100s. To date there has been 63 deaths in the county since March.

Currently there are 873 active cases in Scott County with 2,432 recovered.

There has been 20 new positive COVID-19 cases in Mississippi County since Thursday while the number of active cases has increased to 72 from 69. There has been 17 deaths and 1,052 out of isolation.

At the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston, there is still five active cases with 262 out of isolation.

There were 31 new cases reported Monday in Stoddard County along with six new cases over the weekend. Currently there is 71 active cases with 2,500 recoveries and 59 deaths.

Cape Girardeau County is reporting 1,552 active cases along with 5,850 resolved cases. There has been 105 deaths reported since March.

Pemiscot County is down to 34 active cases with nine hospitalizations.

There has been 29 deaths and 1,390 released from isolation.

Dunklin County has 84 active cases with 18 deaths since March and 2,496 recoveries.

There has been 70 new cases reported in New Madrid County over the last week along with one death. To date, there are 56 active cases and 1,770 out of quarantine while 31 deaths have been attributed to the virus.
