MARSTON, Mo. - A card game took a violent turn Friday evening when one man was shot and another slashed by a knife.

Maurice Reshawn Jones, 23, of Howardville, Mo., is charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action. Charged with seven counts of first degree assault, eight counts of armed criminal action and one count of unlawful use of a weapon is Jonathon Lamont Brown, 21, of Howardville.

According to a probable cause statement by New Madrid County Sheriff Department Investigator Zach Albright, law enforcement officers were notified at 8:40 p.m. Feb. 26, of an assault at a residence on South Lewis Street in Lilbourn. When deputies arrived they saw a large amount of blood leading into the residence.

A witness at the scene told officers a physical altercation began during a card game. During the altercation the witness said the victim, later identified as Brown, yelled, “he cut me.”

Brown allegedly then went outside to his vehicle where the witness said he retrieved “a machine gun and began firing at the residence.” There were seven people in the residence at the time of the shooting.

Brown, who had received a large laceration on the face, was transported to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston for emergency care.

A 51-year-old male was shot in the foot.

He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment of his injury.

Albright noted while processing the scene, officers found a black-handled knife in the driveway of the residence.

The knife had a red liquid on it that appeared to be blood, the officer wrote in the probable cause.

According to online court records, no bond is allowed for either Jones or Brown.

Assisting the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation was the New Madrid Police Department, Marston Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Sikeston Department of Public Safety and the New Madrid County Ambulance District.
