Speakout

Editor’s note: In an effort to not create further discord among the community, the following Speakout comments and a Letter to the Editor published Oct. 20 are the last the Standard Democrat will run on this topic.

Teachers work for taxpayers

After a Speakout was published about teachers getting extra days off for “mental health” I see many teachers calling to stop Speakout. A call to remove free speech and press. These teachers forget they work for the taxpayer in the district. Just do your jobs. If you don’t like the taxpayers' standards then get a new job. I assure you that you will not find a job with a three-month paid break along with every weekend, holiday, and seasonal break off. I’ve been a teacher and have moved to a different industry. I assure you that teachers have it made and have nothing to complain about. You work for us.

Shame on you

As a teacher of Sikeston Public Schools, I am saddened to hear someone would call in Speakout and complain about teachers getting a fall break. No one has any idea how we are treated. We are hit by students; we have constant data we have to do, constant work. I bring work home from school. It is sad that you would call Speakout and post that. I pray for your heart because every single teacher in the whole world busts their butts to teach these kids the skills they need in order to make it in life. We’re teachers, we’re nurses, counselors, friends, moms to these kids. Most of these kids don’t have it good at home. Be thankful you have caring, loving teachers who love these kids as much as we love our own. And shame on you.

Call was disgusting

As a state employee, family member of teachers, friend of teachers, prior substitute teacher — this bit is absolutely disgusting. To compare one’s struggles to another is degrading and dehumanizing. To say their struggle(s) does/do not matter or are less important is beyond disrespectful. Ugly human — be kind. You are what’s wrong with society. Period.

Same teachers?

So the same teachers who were crying on social media about missing their kids when they were sent home during COVID are now needing an extra vacation after working a little over a month?
