World Series bound!
I love St Louis Cardinal playoff baseball, especially in person. I was fortunate to be in the bleachers on Friday night during the Game 6 victory over the Dodgers and let me sum it up in one simple word ... Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!! The atmosphere both inside and outside Busch Stadium before, during and after is intense and fun -- just electric. The pre-game pep rally in Ballpark Village across the street starts the excitement with a band and give-a-ways, the Fox Sports Midwest girls and Team Fredbird making appearances.
Sitting in the bleachers is a fun atmosphere during any game but during a playoff game, especially a series clinching game it is awesome. I don't think I have given so many high fives to strangers as I did that night. I saw some unique personalities and lots of fans that had traveled far and wide to be there for that game. I saw fans with peanut earrings and yes he must have been a season ticket holder because lots of people knew him. I sat next to a man who drove from Chicago and was a White Sox fan cheering just as loud as anyone for the Cards. Another in a row behind drove from Iowa or Idaho or somewhere like that. After the win, the party from inside the stadium moved out into the streets and all the establishments in the area. The rain only soaked the outside because it couldn't dampen the excitement of knowing we are going to the World Series for the fourth time in the last 10 years.
By now if you were wondering, Michael Wacha is the real deal. A friend and I previously discussed prior to the NLDS game 4 in Pittsburgh, that game would potentially make or break his confidence and possibly jump start his career. Well I think we all agree that Wacha has gained as much confidence as anyone could being put in that big of pressure cooker. Not only did he win to keep the Cards in the series to force a Game 5 in the NLDS but to beat arguably the best pitcher in major league baseball Clayton Kershaw not once, but twice in the NLCS is simple remarkable by the 22-year-old rookie. All 27 outs in Friday's Game 6 were made by rookies ages 22-23-years-old. I think we are going to be exciting for the next several years.
As we prepare our rituals and superstitions for the World Series and the Boston Red Sox lets get ready to get some pay back on Boston from the 2004 World Series. I like our chances in this matchup because we have the young flame throwers and plenty of veterans to help keep the rookies focused on the goal of winning the World Series. Our lineup finally got the bats going on Friday and even better, Allen Craig is a possibility to be added to the roster which will add another big bat to either DH or add pop off the bench. So what do you say... Win for Beltran? Win for Stan the Man? I2 in '13!! Lets go Cards!!
