2013 Media Football Pick 'Em -- Week 2
Well, Week 1 is in the books and I have to say I'm satisfied with how my Pick 'Em turned out after the first round of football action.
The Southeast Missourian's Jeff Breer holds a slim lead after the first week missing just one game which was a stumper for most everybody. Sumner's win over St. Vincent got 8 of 9 panelists. The DAR's Scott Borkgren was the only one who called that game right.
The other head scratcher was Malden's 12-0 victory over NMCC which got six of us, including yours truly. I finished 12-2 as did fellow Standard Democrat cohorts Derek James and David Jenkins and the DAR's Rob Tate.
Here's how the local media see Week 2 playing out. (See above)
The two biggest thinkers, for me, was the East Prairie-Grandview matchup and the Portageville-Kennett game.
After scratching out and then re-scratching out numerous predictions, I decided that enough was enough for East Prairie. They end their 19-game losing streak Friday with a close 23-20 win over Grandview. Funny enough, Grandview was the last team the Eags won against in 2011.
I also decided to go with Portageville over Kennett, 21-18. Again, my thinking was swayed numerous times so a close score it will be. I was impressed by Portageville's young-ins in their 39-21 win over St. Pius X -- namely sophomore quarterback Jon Garrett Kellams, who threw for three touchdowns and fellow classmate Daniel McCray, who ran for two scores. Two young players leading their team to 25 points in the first seven minutes of their first game of the season...enough to get my vote against a Kennett team whose filtering in a new QB, Akeem Nelson. That's not to say I wouldn't be shocked to see Kennett pull this one out. I hear Nelson looked to have big-play ability and hopefully he will get things going for the Indians after losing their original starting quarterback, DK Wallace, with a broken foot.
Again, I've attached the tab that will run in our paper every Thursday above with the addition of Jeff Breer's mugshot and picks. If you need help seeing, just give me a shout in the comment section. Or pick up a paper Thursday afternoon.
Let me know how you think our picks stack up or post your picks down below to see how you compare.
As always, thanks for reading.
Make sure to check back Friday for the next episode of The Last Word where myself and David Jenkins discuss the Week 1 matchups and break down this week's games.
