I have been with the Standard Democrat sports department since 2007. I took over as sports editor in May of 2011 and have been slightly crazy about sports since I can remember. I attended Southeast Missouri State University and Scott County Central High School. I co-created our sports web show "The Last Word" and my two children, Elijah and CJ. I was married to my wife, Angie, in May of 2014. I love to golf, I am an avid NBA2K gamer and root for the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

SEMO Conference tournament seeds released

Boy...

I really wouldn't want to have to vote this year.

Here are the 2013 SEMO Conference Tournament seeds hot off the press after Wednesday's seed meeting.

1. Sikeston
2. Jackson
3. Cape
4. Charleston
5. Notre Dame
6. Kennett
7. Poplar Bluff
8. NMCC

I expect a very, very competitive tournament this season with no clear-cut winner in sight. I think if I had to pick a favorite to win, it would be Sikeston. Their SEMO Conference track record speaks for itself (won four of the last five). Plus I'm really going out on a limb and picking the top seed, right? My Dark Horse? Notre Dame. They were very young last season and return virtually everyone. Of course, the same could be said for most of these teams. Those are simply my gut feelings after seeing the seeds for the first time. Of course, like most of you, I wouldn't be surprised to see any one of these teams win the whole thing. This will be an absolutely great way to begin the grind that is southeast Missouri basketball. Love me some hoops...

Has there ever been a more tough 1 vs 8 game in this tournament's history? No easy wins in this tournament.

I see a Jackson v Sikeston final with Jackson taking it. I could be wrong though. Honestly, I could see any team from 1-6 winning it.

I must say though, anytime Charleston is a 4 seed in any tournament, that must mean it's a pretty tough tournament.

I would have NMCC picked to win its district so I'm not sure I understand its seed based on last season's performance against SEMO Conference teams and its returning talent.

I probably would have seeded Cape Central No. 1, but football factors into the seedings.

I'll add I'm not sure I understand Poplar Bluff's seed. I'm not sure if any of the seeds are correct in this event.

I'll add I strongly encourage criticism as I must be in the minority considering the experts voting on the seedings had a different opinion.

I think Jackson is a REALLY good team, but their style of play just never seems to translate down here in SEMO. It will be interesting with the refs saying that this is the year that they tighten up and call hand checks, and see if that changes anything. But in my opinion Jackson will struggle against pressing teams as always.

Which is why they do well against St.Louis teams, because most of them don't press and play the same style as here in SEMO.

Dustin, the "experts voting" are the head coaches of the teams involved. And if a head coach doesn't show up, then it's hard to get information on a team. NMCC returns two players from last year. They are seeded exactly where I thought they would be. I'm curious of how you would seed it.

NMCC returns a lot more than 2 players. 2 starters, but a lot more of the sophomores saw varisty experience and towards the end of the year they were starting 3 sophomores. We also have a guy who moved back to new madrid who was a starter in 2011-12. I think NMCC is going to be tough to beat this year. They beat all the SEMO Conference teams last year and except Jackson and Charleston and they only lost to them by 2 and 6.

I'm just going by what the head coach said here in the recent Riverbend article.

"For us we don't have a lot of varsity experience," Day said. "We only have two guys back from last year that played a lot of varsity in Willie Jimerson and Mikael Walker.

Basically New Madrid has two starters back and while one is all state guard Willie Jimmerson they have lost two huge pieces in Armando Hatch and Haney. I figured they would be bottom two in seeding.

Yeah I saw where he said that. gotta love coach speak. We have about 4 guys that got quite a bit of varisty time, plus the move in. It was just the way you phrased it that they only return "two players" instead of "that saw varisty experience". Made it sound like everybody else moved out of town and we are playing two guys now haha. We did have a bench lol.

I think this years team is way more cohesive tough and will play much better together. They will have better leaders and more people who will add to the team and not take away from it. Better attitudes. I think they got stronger after the seniors left.

Well me either. But it don't really matter, seeds don't matter. You just have to focus on who's in front of you, and play your best. I think on any given night any of these teams can prolly beat each other. So it might be a little raw deal they have to face Sikeston first. But hopefully they show up and get a win.

I get why they gave NMCC the eight seed. I mean, someone had to get it right? I think they'll be a good team again, but do I think they'll be AS good as last year? It remains to be seen. I do know that they'll need to replace a ton of scoring from last year even with Willie coming back which I believe was the main reason for their seed. Out of all teams, NMCC lost the most. That doesn't mean they'll be a bad team by any means. But I do think that makes them the biggest question mark of the conference.

New Madrid got the 8 seed because of the talented teams in front of them. They are really good as well but someone had to be the 8. I think it's the best conference in the state right now.

I've never been reluctant to predict Charleston to win it all, but think they are seeded too high in this tournament.

Wow Dustin I never thought I would see the day you and I agree on a New Madrid issue. (Just Kidding) I really do agree with you. I could have easily seen New Madrid the 6 seed and not an 8 seed.

I personally think they are better than an 8 seed, but in a couple weeks we will all know.

Charleston still has both Bogan's, Robert and Delfincko, sorry if I didn't spell correctly. And they also have Shandor Webster. They will be pretty good, and I realize pretty good isn't the way Charleston is normally characterized. They can still beat anyone in the tourney. I think Jackson will ultimately win it, but no matter which team comes out, won't be easy!
