I have been with the Standard Democrat sports department since 2007. I took over as sports editor in May of 2011 and have been slightly crazy about sports since I can remember. I attended Southeast Missouri State University and Scott County Central High School. I co-created our sports web show "The Last Word" and my two children, Elijah and CJ. I was married to my wife, Angie, in May of 2014. I love to golf, I am an avid NBA2K gamer and root for the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

District time is here for small schools. Who hoists the trophies?

The real season begins on Saturday. For Classes 1-3, that is.

On this week's episode of The Last Word myself and David Jenkins break down each of our local districts and give you a preview of what's to come including who we think will win each district. You can watch it here.

For just a small preview, here's my district-by-district predictions for both boys and girls. To know why I picked the way I did or to see who "Jenks" picked, WATCH THE SHOW!

Boys:
Class 1, District 1: Risco
Class 1, District 2: SCC
Class 2, District 1: Hayti
Class 2, District 2: Thayer
Class 2, District 3: Advance
Class 3, District 1: Charleston
Class 3, District 2: Clearwater

Girls
Class 1, District 1: Naylor
Class 1, District 2: SCC
Class 2, District 1: South Pemiscot
Class 2, District 2: Neelyville
Class 2, District 3: Oran
Class 3, District 1: Twin Rivers
Class 3, District 2: Saxony Lutheran

Class 2 dist 1 boys any of top 3 teams

Class 3 dist 1 girls up for grabs top 6 teams have chance.

Class 3 dist 2 saxony but watch out for arcadia valley.

Chris, I agree with all your picks on the boys side except C2D1 where I will go with Bernie. They've beaten Hayti twice already, the last time without Ellenburg.

I also agree with all of your girls picks except for C3D1 where I will take Doniphan. But watch out for the red hot Kelly Lady Hawks. They got jobbed by getting the #6 seed IMHO. Same with the Woodland Lady Cardinals in C3D2. How did a team with only 3 or 4 losses get the #5 seed?

I can't speak a lot on the Lady Cardinals Preach, seeing as that I haven't seen them play, but the only scenario I can imagine that happening during a seed meeting is a strength of schedule situation or a coach not pushing for a higher seed. NOT AT ALL saying that was the case, but you have five teams that have 4, 4, 5, 6 and 7 losses in that particular district that make up the top five seeds. Saxony Lutheran (19-4) is an obvious No. 1, IMO, followed by Arcadia Valley (18-6), Clearwater (20-4), St. Pius (17-7) and Woodland (17-5).

As far as Kelly, the reason a six seed for them looks like a scrub deal is because (I think) they've won five straight since the seed meeting occurred and ended the season winning 10 of their last 11. I'd say that's a good way to finish off a season...

And Hayti. Like I said on the show, it's completely a gut pick. You honestly can't go wrong with either Hayti, Bernie or South Pemiscot at this point. I tried to come up with a clear-cut advantage for either team but they've all beaten up on each other all season long. Should make for a great semifinal and final though. I'm hoping we get to cover that final, at least, since it's the only tournament that did it the right way and held championship night on a Friday night.

I can agree that C3D2 could be a tough district, but Clearwater just put a whoopin on AV Monday night, and has beat West County, which are the other two tops seeds in this district. I would have to go with C'water because they are tough, especially at home! C'water has also beaten some other tough teams this year like South Iron, Winona, and Twin Rivers. Good luck to all teams in C3D2! GO TIGERS!!

Girls C3 D2 is pretty simple, Clearwater beat Woodland, and AV beat Clearwater, and Pius has most of the team back that beat Woodland last year.... so Saxony, AV, Clearwater, Pius, Woodland, if anything Woodland should have gotten the 6, since Jefferson split with Pius, and beat them in most recent game between the 2
