I have been with the Standard Democrat sports department since 2007. I took over as sports editor in May of 2011 and have been slightly crazy about sports since I can remember. I attended Southeast Missouri State University and Scott County Central High School. I co-created our sports web show "The Last Word" and my two children, Elijah and CJ. I was married to my wife, Angie, in May of 2014. I love to golf, I am an avid NBA2K gamer and root for the Fighting Irish on Saturdays.

Media Football Pick 'Em District Semifinals

When you get to this stage of the playoffs, the cream starts rising to the top. Apparently, nobody told Kennett and Fredericktown about that.

No. 7 Fredericktown goes on the road to No. 6 Kennett in Class 3, District 1 after surprising some with big, upset wins last Friday. Freddy defeated No. 2 Potosi and Kennett took down Ste. Genevieve behind quarterback Edward Wilson's performance. I said last week that this was the time for Kennett to get a signature win that has eluded them for some time and they delivered in a big way. Now they're sitting in a position to possibly advance to the district championship game. I don't think anyone saw that happening entering the season. I'm taking Kennett once again to play Park Hills Central next week in the title game.

As for the rest of my picks, I went chalk. I think the Sikeston-Cape Central game will be closer the second time around and East Prairie hangs around with Caruthersville. For a more in-depth look at this week's games, hop on over to our web show, The Last Word if you're feeling froggy.

And guess what? Malden is about 160 points away from breaking the all-time state scoring record. I'm setting the over-under at 59 this week. Any takers?

I don't think Sikeston has any chance of beating Cape Central. I'd be shocked if the game was close.

I mostly just enjoy seeing how many points each person predicts Malden to score each week. Looks like Scott wins this week with 72 points.

The unanimous predictions in Caruthersville-East Prairie and Kennett-Fredericktown are surprising. Perhaps some are playing it safe and trying not to lose points.

Well thank you Jolly. But I like Dustin and he is the sports editor for the Daily Statesman, so he should be included IMHO. I would also like to see Rachel Crader in the mix as the moderator of Semoball. It would be interesting to see how she does against the guys! Pretty well would be my guess.

I extend the invitation to all our our representing media members and I completely understand why some may choose not to be included. Coaches, fans and even players know if we pick for or, most importantly, against them and it could make for an awkward working relationship with some. I'm not speaking for anyone who is not on our panel, but to some a Pick 'Em may best be left alone. I hope everyone knows this is mostly for fun and I think it adds to the excitement of Friday nights. I can speak for all of our panel members and say that our picks are in no way a reflection of how we view coaches or players on a personal level. It's purely a "let the best man win" scenario and we choose who we think the better team is.

Ok, I'm done now haha. Just wanted that to be known to all.

Thanks for the explanation Chris. That's very interesting, although I would question the maturity of any coach who would hold it against any journalist who picks against his team.

That's my thinking too Preach. And I wasn't speaking on experience or of any particular coach. Just reasons why someone would not want to participate.

If a coach is that worried about a media pick 'em, then that's probably the reason his team wasn't picked.
