John Hartwell

CAMPBELL - John William Hartwell Sr., 90, died Aug. 30, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Born July 31, 1911, at Hayti, son of the late James Alexander and Sarah Wigington Hartwell, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired as a campus police officer for St. Louis University, was a member of Four Mile Masonic Lodge in Campbell and attended the Beechwell General Baptist Church in rural Campbell.

On July 24, 1951, at Piggott, Ark., he married Gladys C. Crutchfield who preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 1990.

Survivors include: three sons, John William Hartwell II of Florissant, James Douglas Hartwell of Ferguson and Robert Manley Hartwell of Spanish Lake; one brother, George Hudson Hartwell of Thayer; and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Four brothers and five sisters also preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie where services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. John Schlager of Campbell will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
