CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston's junior varsity soccer team shocked host team Cape Central in a JV tournament on Wednesday.

Sikeston (6-11-1) defeated Central 3-1, the first-ever win for the JV Bulldogs over the Tigers.

"I don't get to talk much about the junior varsity, but this week is a good time for them to shine," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "We've played Cape Central twice this year and they handled us pretty easily, but tonight, even the last three or four games, the JV has started to click. Cape wasn't expecting a battle and we came out and gave them one."

Adam Gillean scored twice and Jacob Owens had a free-kick goal for the Bulldogs. Hunter Dillender had two assists.

On Monday night, Sikeston's tourney-opening match against Poplar Bluff was halted by lightning with the Bulldogs trailing 2-1. The final 30 minutes of the contest resumed on Tuesday and ended with the Bulldogs on the short end of a 4-2 score.

Gillean and Justin Deere found the net for the Bulldogs, off assists from Chris Matthews and Johnny Peeler.

Sikeston (1-1 in the eight-team tournament) plays for fifth place against Farmington on Thursday at 4 p.m.
