Elva McConnell Jr.
CHAFFEE - Elva Estes McConnell Jr., 77, died Sept. 4, 2001, at Chaffee Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 7, 1923, at Malden, son of the late Elva Estes and Gertrude Ellen Markle McConnell Sr., he served in the U.S. Marines during World War II and was at the Battle of Midway. He was a social studies teacher and coached high school basketball and baseball for 35 years, the last 22 of which were spent at Chaffee High School. A member of the First Baptist Church in Chaffee, where he served as a deacon for many years, he served on the Chaffee City Council, Chaffee Police Board and the Chaffee School Board; and was also a member of the Chaffee Rotary Club.
On Sept. 9, 1949, he married Virginia Jordan who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald McConnell of Memphis, Tenn., and David and Denise McConnell of Gainesville, Ga.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Auggie and Cathy Urhahn of Scott City, Susan Ciluffo of Jackson and Ed and Frances Dooley of Chaffee; one sister, Bonnie Holmes of Belding, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services were conducted at 1 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee with the Rev. Charley Shrum and the Rev. Lee Roy Quinn, officiating.
Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden.
Pallbearers were: Ryan Dooley, John Ciluffo, Dan Hecht, Keith Mitchell, John Payne and Dennis Bess.
