Elmer Barnes
SIKESTON - Elmer L. Barnes Jr., 78, died Sept. 24, 2002, at his home.
Born April 17, 1924, in St. Louis, son of the late E.L. and Etta Mae Elliott Barnes Sr., he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He graduated from Kennett High School and attended the University of Missouri. A cotton broker with the Anderson Clayton Company for 27 years, he later owned and operated his own cotton brokerage company before retiring. He served with the U.S. Navy as a flight crewman on various aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
He was married to Dorothy J. White who preceded him in death on April 19, 1995.
In April 1996, he married Evelyn Struwe and she survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons, Dennis Elliott Barnes Sr. of St. Louis and Bruce Barnes of Sikeston; one daughter, Rebecka Marine of Frederick, Md.; two sisters, Sue Etta Pruitt of Tupelo, Miss., and Alma Louise Landon of Angleton, Texas; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ponder Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be private with Bob E. Dye, nephew of Evelyn Barnes, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Kennett.
Pallbearers will be: Dennis Barnes Jr., Tim Barnes, Scott Barnes, Jonathan Marine, grandsons of the deceased.
