DEXTER -- Dexter's Katie Dunlap scored 17 points and collected four blocks while leading the Lady Bearcats (5-0) over Greenville's Lady Bears (0-3) 61-38 Monday night.
"I told the girls coming in tonight that they (Greenville) were going to be a much improved team and they were," said Dexter's head coach Gavin Miller. "I thought that Katie did a good job for us tonight on the block and that Amy (Krapu) did a good job of playing while Katie got a break."
This game was never really close as Dexter jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter.
Dunlap and Hannah Burleson combined for eight points, one more than all of the Lady Bears had in the second frame as DHS held a 32-14 lead at the half.
Greenville's biggest outpouring of points came in the third period as Emily Ross dropped in eight of her 14 points. The Lady Bears could not control the Lady Bearcats though as Dexter widened its lead to 48-29.
April Rogers dropped in five of her nine for the Lady Bears in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as Dexter senior Amy Rose finished the game with a trey at the buzzer. Rose's three upped the score to 61-38. Lady Bear Mandy Crites led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Emily Ross was the other Greenville girl in double digits as she finished with 14.
Dunlap led the Lady 'Cats with 17 points. Burleson, Amy Rose and Rachel Blunt all dropped in 10 for Dexter.
"We are going to have the advantage this year of overmanning some teams, but our girls are going to have to get better on defense. I am very pleased with the victory, but we do still have some things to work on," said Miller.
"I was happy to see that I got almost all the girls in tonight - which is quite a feat with 14 players. We know that we have a big test coming up later this week."
The Lady Bearcats will play Notre Dame in the HealthSouth Classic which will be played at the Show Me Center. DHS is schedule to play their first game on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.
Dexter's junior varsity Lady Bearcats also picked up its fourth win of the season as they defeated the jayvee Lady Bears 47-28.
