Helen Fowlkes

CHARLESTON - Helen Young Fowlkes, 76, died at 5:50 p.m. Feb. 8, 2003, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.

Born Jan. 31, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Irving Axtell and Mildred Louisa Young, she had lived most of her adult life in Charleston, where she was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir. She was a former member of the Katherine Boone Music Club and served as an election judge in local elections.

On June 7, 1947, she married Charles W. Fowlkes, who preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1991.

Surviving are: two sons, Robert I. Fowlkes of Los Angeles, Calif., and Wayne D. Fowlkes of DeForrest, Wis.; one daughter, Virginia Brewer of Charleston; one brother, Wayne Young of Waycross, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

One daughter, Janice Sutherland Palmer, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until time for services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Roger Jespersen, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bob Whitehead, Ben Whitehead, George Simmons, David Brewer II, Alfred Marshall, Mike McIlroy and Matthew Morrow.
