MATTHEWS - Fire, churned by an arctic winter wind Tuesday night, destroyed nine business buildings and two residences in the most severe conflagration on record at Matthews. The loss was estimated at between $50,000 and $75,000. Structures razed were in the center of the business district.

CANALOU - The Hammock Brothers Store at Canalou was broken into sometime last night when a thief or thieves broke in the front door by breaking off the lock. After gaining entrance the thieves broke in the store's safe by using a sledge hammer to knock off the combination and a crowbar to expel the safe's door. Missing was about $1,000.

SIKESTON - The Department of Public Safety reported today that several burglaries have been cleared with the arrest of four Sikeston residents.

MALDEN - Two more wins and so far, the team has dodged the bullet, avoided the big let-down. Charleston shook what some feared could be fatigue teamed with overconfidence and raced past Malden 65-53 Tuesday. The game was Charleston's fifth in six days after competing in the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, then the first round of the Superman Classic at Metropolis, Ill., on Monday. The 4-1 Bluejays can relax until Friday.
SIKESTON - The Sikeston Little Theatre presented "Some Enchanted Evening" featuring Kay Cathey and Earl Braswell, both veteran SLT performers.
