SIKESTON - A proposal under which a venetian blind factory might locate here, giving employment to approximately 20 persons, was outlined by president George L. Hale Jr., who disclosed that the firm in St. Louis had corresponded with E.M. Leech.
SIKESTON - The Board of Curators of the University of Missouri have announced the promotion of Dr. William R. Sappenfield, associate professor of field crops at Southeast Missouri Research Center near Sikeston, to professor of field crops.
EAST PRAIRIE - Arson is suspected in two separate fires early Saturday that destroyed one home and heavily damaged another. One family barely escaped death or serious injury from the fire. State fire marshals were called to investigate both fires.
EAST PRAIRIE - "It took God billions of years to create these beautiful wetlands," said Ducks Unlimited Regional Director Mitch Rogers, "and then Christopher Columbus came here in 1492 and it took us just 500 years to destroy it." Dozens of dignitaries and conservationists gathered along Highway 102 Thursday afternoon to dedicate the 3,898-acre section of protected wetlands. The $5.2 million project was started 10 years ago, and it isn't finished yet. "Of all the wildlife habitats possible in Missouri," said DeeCee Darrow, a wildlife management specialist, "wetlands are the toughest to come by, so Ten Mile Pond is a vital restoration project.
