KRCC telethon has message to share

Sunday, March 7, 2004

Next weekend will put the spotlight on the annual Kenny Rogers Children's Center Telethon and the remarkable work accomplished at the center. I believe that most Sikeston residents are aware of the center and have a general understanding of the miracles that occur there. But until you live and breathe with the therapists and the kids, you can only imagine what takes place.

The telethon has become a tradition like the Cotton Carnival and the Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo. It focuses attention for one brief weekend on a facility here that is respected throughout the Midwest. And that respect comes from accomplishment. The accomplishment comes from hard work and dedication. And the entire community should share in the pride of this fantastic facility.

The telethon is a premiere event that combines fun and entertainment along with information and learning. When it's over, thousands of dollars will be raised to continue the mission of the KRCC. Anyway you slice it, that's a good combination.

But an event of this size doesn't happen by accident. Hundreds of volunteers have long been working on the details that will combine next Saturday and Sunday to put the spotlight on the center. Their work should be appreciated by residents of this area because they put a positive light on our community and our capacity to accept a challenge.

As has been said countless times in the past, the stars of the telethon are the kids who receive services at the center. This telethon gives them an opportunity to highlight their progress and to tell their story to the public. I've had the distinct pleasure of working on this telethon over the years and nothing compares with the smile on the face of a kid in the spotlight.

Telethon organizers have assured there will be something for everyone. Great food and entertainment will combine with fun activities that should interest the entire family. And in the middle of this fun will remain the message of the center. That subtle approach to education about the center is the true gift of the telethon.

Everyone hopes and prays that they will never need the services of the center. Yet if they should, it's impressive that these talented therapists and staff are available right here in Sikeston. That's extremely impressive for a community our size.

In short, mark your calendars for next weekend. Take the time to hear the kids' stories and to learn more about the center. And then, when you've heard those stories, dig deep in your heart and pocket and help this dream expand. You'll feel good about yourself if you do. That's a promise.
