SIKESTON - Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a fire at 7:46 a.m. Wednesday at 222 W. Gladys.
Three minutes later, DPS firefighters arrived to find flames showing from the second story and heavy smoke.
One of the children in the home said he smelled smoke and told an adult woman who discovered fire in an upstairs bedroom, according to Sgt. Bill Mygatt of the DPS. The occupants reportedly left the structure and no injuries were reported although the structure's second story suffered extensive damage.
Firefighters worked approximately three hours before leaving the scene.
An investigation determined the fire's cause to be related to wiring behind an entertainment center.
