BERTRAND - Lawrence "Tater" Tate, 79, died Jan. 19, 2004, at the Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter.

Born Jan. 14, 1925, in Bertrand to the late Robert Ernest and Ressie Haithcoate Tate, he had lived in St. Charles for many years and in Dexter for the past 20 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II, he was a prisoner of war for 12 months. He had retired from Florida Marine.

Surviving are: two sons, Michael Tate and James Tate of St. Peters; one brother, Bobbie Tate of Frankfort, Del.; two sisters, Elva Cantrell of Kerman, Calif., and Lucille West of Sikeston; and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Tate, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter where services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Mike Watkins of Dexter will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery near Bloomfield with military honors provided by the Stoddard County Veterans Honors Team.
