EAST PRAIRIE - Alma Jean Smothers, 73, died at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10, 2003, at her home.

Born March 2, 1930, in Corning, Ark., daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie Maxwell Kearby, she lived in East Prairie most of her life and was of the Baptist belief. She was a cook for the East Prairie R-2 School District for many years before retiring.

On Oct. 18, 1945, she married Delmar O. Smothers who preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1989.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jean Elizabeth Cole of Truxton; three sons, Jimmie Smothers and Bruce Smothers of Granite City, Ill., and Delmar Smothers Jr. of Charleston; and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation begins at 5 p.m. today at Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday. Martin Lucas and Fred Girdwood will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery near East Prairie.
