Lower seeded teams play their way into next round

BLOOMFIELD -- In front of their hometown crowd, the Bloomfield Wildcats pulled off a major upset to open the Class 2A District 2 tournament as they shocked the East Prairie Eagles 67-49.

Junior Dustin Massey of Bloomfield led all scorers in the game with 19 points.

Bloomfield's center, junior Colby Sandage, played a key role in the Wildcats' success as he dropped in 15 points with 6 of his points coming in the final frame.

The Wildcats opened up with a 16-12 lead after one quarter, mainly due to two three pointers and three buckets from Massey.

Josh Shoffner returned the favor for East Prairie as he hit two triples in the first frame.

The Wildcats main frame came in the second as seven players combined for 23 points to give Bloomfield a 39-23 at the half.

In the third quarter, Jordan Sanders and Shoffner both hit treys for East Prairie to help cut the Wildcats lead to 49-35, but Bloomfield would recover with 18 in the final quarter to take the 67-49 win.

The Wildcats will play number one seeded Notre Dame on Monday at 6:30.

Number seven seeded Greenville led this game throughout.

Junior Jason West went on a tirade to begin the game for Greenville as he hit six baskets in the first quarter to single-handedly outscore the Red Devils.

Behind West's 12, Greenville led 20-9 after one.

In the second quarter, West cooled as he only scored five points, but teammate Jarred Green collected the hot hand as he hit a pair of threes and a jumper to pitch into a 20 points frame for the Bears giving Greenville a 40-21 lead at intermission.

The third quarter saw West and Green combine for 13 points to give the Bears to a 61-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter Chaffee posted 27 points and only allowed Greenville to drop in eight, but the big finish wasn't enough for the Red Devils.

In the last period James Reischman did most of his damage for Chaffee as he hit three treys, on field goal, and a free throw to total 12 of his team high 20.

The eight point victory allows Greenville to move on into the tournament, in which they will take on number two seeded Charleston on Tuesday.

Tip off is slated for 6:00.
