Yvon Burgess
PORTAGEVILLE - Yvon Burgess, 86, died June 9, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born May 3, 1917, in Hayward, son of the late William Henry and Jessie Boon Burgess, he was a retired salesman and U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He owned and operated a Big Star grocery store in Hayti and later owned a wholesale company in Mayfield, Ky. After he retired, Burgess moved to Panorama Shores on Kentucky Lake near Murray and later returned to Portageville.
On Jan. 9, 1945, in Hayward, he married Mary Gaye Edmundson who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sisters, Alma Jean Cook of Nashville, Tenn., and Theolene Spencer of Hayward; five nieces and husbands, Margaret Boblitt and Juanita Stewart of Memphis, Tenn., Audrey and Phil Bowen of Hayti and Pat and Bill Foster and Linda and Bill Wagner of Portageville; and six nephews and their wives, James Spencer of Madison, Tenn., Larry Spencer and Charles and Regina Spencer of Portageville, Mike and Patsy Kelley of Carefree, Ariz., Danny Joe and Pat Cook of Henderson, Nev., and John A. and Sue Ann Cook of Arvada, Colo.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding him in death were four brothers, Willis Burgess, Alphonse Burgess, Henry Coleman Burgess and Talmadge Burgess; and four sisters, Dora Ward, Geraldine Kelly, Daisy Heitman and Florida Burgess.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. today at DeLisle Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Inman officiating.
Burial will follow in the Portageville Cemetery.
