ORAN -- The Class 1, District 2 baseball tournament started with three first-round games on Monday. No. 5 Bernie pulled off a mild upset over No. 4 Advance 6-0, No. 2 Chaffee rolled past No. 7 Delta 23-1, and No. 3 Bell City blanked No. 6 Scott Central 11-0.
The Red Devils scored nine runs in the first inning and 13 in the third, rolling to the uncontested victory.
Chaffee hit three home runs in the third inning to pull away.
"We're swinging the bats well right now," said Chaffee coach Brian Horrell.
Brandon Davis was 4-for-4 with a two-run homer. Zac Horman was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Brent Thomason had a solo shot and drove in three runs.
Robert Coomer and Corey Chapman were both 2-for-3. Ryan Goetz was 2-for-2. James Reischman and Sam Burnett also provided hits.
Thomason picked up the win in three innings. He allowed one hit and one walk with four strikeouts. Jessie Gettings threw the final two frames, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Delta's Pat Lingo was charged with the loss. The team's two hits came from A.J. Begley and Terrance Below.
Chaffee (12-10) will face Bell City in the semifinals today at 4:30 p.m. Burnett is expected to get the start.
"We're going to have to be ready," said Horrell. "They've got a pretty good ballclub with a couple of nice athletes. We're going to have our hands full."
Sophomore Zach Dill pitched a complete-game shutout, knocking off Advance, 6-0.
In seven innings, he gave up two hits and no walks with six strikeouts.
"Zach pitched his best game of the year by far, maybe the best game of his career," said Bernie head coach John Grundy. "He pitched really well and kept them off balance by changing up his speeds."
He also paced the Mules at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with a double. Josh Simpson and Travis Blanchard both went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Cory White also provided a hit.
"It was one of the few games where we didn't have any errors, so that really helped too," said Grundy. "I think it gave (Dill) confidence, knowing we were going to make plays behind him."
Advance's Dustin Sexton was charged with the loss. Josh Bailey and Hudson had the team's two hits.
Bernie (6-10) will face Oran in the semifinals today at 2:30 p.m. Blanchard will draw the start.
"We're just happy to get a shot (at Oran) and see how we stack up," said Grundy. "It's a great opportunity for our seniors."
Darrell Bailey was 2-for-3, scored two runs and blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lead Bell City to victory.
Ben Duncan also went deep for Bell City in the fourth with a three-run shot. He finished the game with two runs scored and four RBIs.
"We hit the ball well there in the fourth inning," said Bell City head coach Matt Asher. "We were just using it as a tuneup for Chaffee. They've got a pretty good team and we'll have our work cut out for us."
Ty Brown was 2-for-3 with two runs and a double. Kenyon Wright was 2-for-3 with a double, and RBI and a run.
Jack Daniels was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a double.
Daniels also picked up the win in five innings of work. He allowed two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
Scott Central's Daniel Holman was charged with the loss. Pershard Owens had both hits for the Braves.
Bell City (13-4) will face Chaffee in the semifinal round today at 4:30 p.m.
"It's sort of similar to last year," said Asher. "We were the three-seed, and we beat the two-seed. We feel pretty confident that we have a pretty good chance of pulling out tomorrow's game and getting to the championship."
