Like thousands before them, the 200 or so members of the Sikeston High School Class of '03 will sit somewhat patiently tonight, listening to the words spoken to them and about them. I hate to burst anyone's bubble but, in fact, those words will quickly be lost. The meaning behind those words may well linger through the years. But the words will fade with time...

But the words will fade with time.

So let me offer the following advice for what it's worth. And it may well be not much.

Take time to laugh each day.

Take your future studies seriously but not so seriously that you forget to live the next few years. Believe me, they'll be gone soon enough as it is. Higher education is increasingly essential in our society. But book knowledge without a purpose and a well-rounded experience is just that - book knowledge.

Listen to your parents. More often than not, they know what they're talking about.

Cherish your high school years. But for goodness sakes, don't keep reliving them far into the future. Grow up! And in that growth enjoy the new experiences, the new friends, the new life that lies ahead.

Life doesn't go on forever. Just because you're young, there is no promise for tomorrow regardless of what you are told. You can pray and work and study and play. But life doesn't come with guarantees. Not this life at least.

Respect your elders because that includes me and a few million others. Maybe, just maybe, we've been down the road you're about to travel and maybe, just maybe, we know what we're talking about.

Thank a teacher because you want to and not just because it seems like the right thing to do. Some day all too soon you will truly appreciate what these dedicated men and women have provided for you. One day it will be your turn to teach someone else. Don't wait until then to thank those who held your hand this far.

Turn to the friend next to you or the one in front of or behind you and appreciate what you've gone through together. You'll gather again someday but it won't be the same. You will never recapture this moment though some of the moments ahead will bring new found joys.

And finally, take advice - including that written in this column - with a grain of salt. None of us has all of the answers. But at least give us the respect to listen.

Now go conquer the world kids. God only knows it needs you.
