CHARLESTON - Former Charleston Mayor Sam E. Story Sr., 73, died at 10:15 p.m. April 9, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 11, 1928, in Charleston, son of the late Ernest Albert and Mary Leobe Story, he was a landowner and retired farmer.

Story, who served as mayor from 1971-72, was a lifelong resident of Charleston where he was a member of the United Methodist Church and served on the administrative board. He was chairman of the board for First Security State Bank in Charleston and Security State Bank of Southeast Missouri in Caruthersville. A member of Charleston Masonic Lodge 407 AF&AM, the American Legion and the Mensa International Society, he was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and Shriner with the Moolah Temple in St. Louis. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

On June 10, 1948, he married Becky Holt who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son, Sam E. Story Jr. of Sikeston; one daughter, Rebel Dugan of Charleston; and five grandchildren, Holt Dugan and Boothe Dugan of Charleston and Madeline Story, Virginia Story and Charles Story of Sikeston.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Abbie Story and George G. Story.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the family home, 1660 E. Marshall St.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Charleston. The Rev. Ed Hankinson, pastor, and the Rev. Rick White, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Lee's Summit, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.

Pallbearers will be: Holt Dugan, Boothe Dugan, Tom Story, Pete Story, John Story, Stephen Story, Hetherington Story and Buck Story.
