Lucille Dowdy
CLIFTON FORGE, Va. - A gracious lady, Lucille Moll Dowdy, 83, died July 12, 2002, after a year-long struggle with cancer. She died surrounded by the love of those she cherished at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Janie and William Barnette.
Additional survivors include her grandson Joel and his wife, Elizabeth Barnette and great-granddaughter, Natalie Anne of Blacksburg; grandson Jeff and wife Colleen Barnette and great-grandson, Sean Kirk of Ashburn; and her granddaughter Sheri Anne Barnette of Fairfax.
Also surviving, are a brother and sister-in-law, Joe Birch and Velva Moll, their daughter Tammy and grandson, Andy, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a special niece Linda Storey Ross of Memphis, Tenn.; special friends Sally Bonner of Fayetteville, Ga., Carole and J.D. Cravey of Sharpsburg, Ga., Judy Scott and Cathy Hall both of Clifton Forge and Janet Robinson of Millboro.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joel in 1976 and daughter, Sheri Gwyn in 1954. She was also predeceased by her sister, Geraldine Moll Storey.
She blessed the lives of those who knew her with her love, caring, compassion and friendship. During the last few months of her struggle with melanoma, she shared her joy of life and her courage with all those she touched. Cancer took her life, but never crushed her spirit. By her example, she taught her family to live with graciousness and die with dignity.
Born in Sikeston, Mo., on April 30, 1919 she was the daughter of the late Janie Mae Allard and Joe Birch Moll. She lived in Sikeston, Carbondale and Cairo, Ill., Miami, Fla., and Atlanta, Ga., before moving to Clifton Forge in 1975.
Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. today in the Nicely Funeral Home Chapel, where a service celebrating her life will begin at 4 p.m.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Dexter Cemetery.
