CHARLESTON - Mississippi County residents will be paying set fees for dumping waste at the county landfill beginning March 1, according to First District County Commissioner Lindsay Hurley, who met Tuesday evening with the City Council. Hurley emphasized that the county court has "gone as far as possible with some help" in keeping the landfill in operation, noting equipment is wearing out and no replacement funds are available.
SIKESTON - January's Standard Democrat Calendar Girl is Frannie Trum, a Sikeston Senior High School student and cheerleader. The daughter of Rick and Mattie Trum, Frannie, plans to attend college and major in communications. Her future plans include a career as a broadcast journalist.

EAST PRAIRIE - Jared Williams, superintendent of the R-2 School District since June 1987, will return to the classroom for the 1995-96 school year. In response to Monday evening's formal decision by the Board of Education not to renew his contract, Williams said, "I wasn't surprised. I feel super - really I feel better than I have in 10 years." He said he's not ready to retire and his return to the classroom will release him from stress and tension associated with the superintendent's position.
