Sikeston tracksters up and down in Columbia

JEFFERSON CITY - The Sikeston Bulldogs track and field team had an up and down day at the MSHSAA Class 3 State Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City on Friday.

With most of Friday's events being preliminary races, final team standings weren't known until Saturday night.

Results from the entire meet will run in Tuesday's edition.

After Friday, Sikeston only qualified Tyler Woodson in the 110 and 300 hurdles and the Bulldogs' 4 x 200 relay team made it through.

Heading into Saturday's races, Woodson posted the third best 110 meter hurdle time and the second best 300 hurdle time.

"He ran very good in the highs and the lows and dropped almost a full second off his 300 time," said Sikeston coach Jerry Dement.

The Bulldogs' 4 x 200 team posted the third best time of the day.

"Our 4 x 200 relay ran very well," said Dement. "We had just a little bit of a slow exchange on one leg that probably cost us the second seed."

Those were the highlights.

Of the disappointments, Sikeston's 4 x 100 meter relay team finished in 10th place and didn't qualify for the second day.

Also, Felante Larry didn't qualify in the 100 meter dash and placed a disappointing 11th in the triple jump.

Also failing to qualify were Quinton Lamb in the 200 and 400 meter dashes and Thomas Elery in the 200 meter dash.

"Our 4 x 100 team ran decently but it was just really fast up here today," said Dement. "Everybody really dropped their times. Quinton and Thomas ran decently in the 200 but not enough to make the finals. It was kind of an up and down day for us. We're going to have to really rally around and charge hard (Saturday). We've got six events left to try to point in and I think we're going to have a good chance to do that."

On the girls side, Sikeston's Traci Jackson and Paige Kaiser performed well but did not place in their respective events.

Jackson took 11th in the 800 meter run with a personal best time of 2:25.21.

Kaiser tied her personal best in the pole vault with a leap of 9'0" but placed 14th.

Even though Traci didn't place we're really pleased with her performance, especially being a first timer up here. Paige tied her personal best at nine feet. They didn't place but it shows the level of competition up here at state."
