NEW MADRID - Capt. Jimmy D. Cheatham, 63, died May 5, 2005, in Sikeston. Born Jan. 22, 1942, in New Madrid, son of Ruby May Woods of Caruthersville and the late James Robert Cheatham, he served 43 years in the towing/barge industry including 36 years as a pilot and captain on the western rivers. In 1962 he began his career with the American Commercial Barge Line and he was currently employed under the flag of Excel on the motor vessel River Eagle...

NEW MADRID - Capt. Jimmy D. Cheatham, 63, died May 5, 2005, in Sikeston.

Born Jan. 22, 1942, in New Madrid, son of Ruby May Woods of Caruthersville and the late James Robert Cheatham, he served 43 years in the towing/barge industry including 36 years as a pilot and captain on the western rivers. In 1962 he began his career with the American Commercial Barge Line and he was currently employed under the flag of Excel on the motor vessel River Eagle.

On Aug. 19, 1960, in Marston, he married Rose Dolan Cheatham who survives of the home.

Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are: one son, Jimmy L. Cheatham of New Madrid; one brother, Bill Woods Jr. of Belleville, Ill.; one sister, Sandee Wigginton of Caruthersville; his stepfather, Bill Woods Sr. of Caruthersville; and one granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Cheatham.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Deborah K. Cheatham.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Richards Funeral Home with a Rosary scheduled for 4 p.m. today. Graveside services will be conducted at 9:

30 a.m. Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid with the Rev. Randy Tochtrop officiating.
