SIKESTON - Tennis enthusiasts, there's still time to put your skills on display this weekend at one of the area's finest open amateur tennis tourneys.

The entry deadline for the Ed Nunnelee Memorial Tennis Tournament, originally set for Wednesday, has been extended to Thursday at 7 p.m.

Entrants from the states of Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky are on board to participate in the 14th annual tournament, but openings remain in both the junior and adult divisions. Sikeston area juniors, in particular, are encouraged to enter.

"We would certainly like to have some more of our own kids compete in the event," said tournament founder Tom Nunnelee.

Juniors competition, both singles and doubles, will be contested on Friday. Check-in time is 8 a.m. Age-group divisions for boys and girls are 12-and-under, 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18.

Adult competition begins on Saturday, also with an 8 a.m. check-in time, and concludes on Sunday. Adult play in both singles and doubles includes men's open, men's A class, men's B class and women's open. There is also an open mixed doubles competition.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Ed Nunnelee Scholarship Fund, which provides monies to Sikeston High School students who plan to attend college.

Telephone entries will be accepted by Lee Shell at home (573) 471-4188 or office (573) 472-2080, tournament director Joe Childress at home (573) 471-7160, or Tom Nunnelee at home (573) 471-2242 or office (573) 471-0935.
