NEW MADRID -- The second round of the 10th annual Riverbend Classic was held on Saturday.
In the opener of the final day of the two-day shootout, Byhalia (Miss.) edged Covington (Tenn.) 66-64.
Charleston, behind 64 points from a trio of super sophomores, defeated Hattiesburg (Miss.) 71-45 in the second contest.
The Jays' point guard Shawn Sherrell led all scorers with 29 points, while his second-year teammates Justin Clark and Jamarcus Williams chipped in with 19 and 16, respectively.
New Madrid County Central met Pine Bluff (Ark.) in the third game, a 46-29 loss for NMCC.
Joseph Howell led the Eagles with nine points, Malcolm Long and Eugene Cooper added six apiece.
In the evening's finale, Vashon outlasted West Memphis (Ark.) 41-38 in a low scoring, but entertaining contest.
Vashon, the defending Class 4 Missouri state champion, trailed West Memphis, the defending Class 5A Arkansas state champion, 35-29 at the end of the third quarter.
But Vashon went on a 10-2 run to take a 39-37 lead at the 5:17 mark of the fourth quarter. Two consecutive conventional three-point plays off rim-rattling dunks provided the impetus for the Wolverines' comeback.
West Memphis then went into a stall, holding the ball for about three and a half minutes. A Vashon foul sent West Memphis to the line with a chance to tie, but the shooter missed one of two to trim the lead to 39-38 with 1:34 left.
With 21 seconds to go, Vashon's Bobby Hill drove for a layin to send the Wolverines up by three at 41-38.
A last-second 3-point attempt by West Memphis fluttered on the rim, then bounced high off the board and nearly fell in at the buzzer.
Vashon and Pine Bluff finished with 2-0 records in the exhibition-style tournament.
Charleston, West Memphis, Covington and Byhalia compiled 1-1 marks and Hattiesburg and NMCC were winless at 0-2.
