~Fall soccor season around the corner

SIKESTON -- The word is out: girls soccer is thriving in Sikeston. From the excitement of their first year of high school soccer to the under 8 recreational spring all-star team, this spring has had plenty of girls playing soccer. A new season is around the corner for the start of fall soccer.

Many girls from Sikeston are attending two or three soccer camps this summer. The Fas Gas team played in approximately 50 matches from December through May, with Jordi Ferrell, Katie DeLaRosa, and Jordan Rodgers playing in another thirty for their respective SMSC teams.

Next year will see Paige Silverthorn play for the Sikeston High School team after years of playing with the SMSC teams. Kayla Priday and Amy Rushing started their select training this past fall with a U-10 team. Too many girls to mention are already playing for SMSC and a lot more have expressed interest in playing at a higher level now is your chance to see what it is all about.

Come and listen to some of the trainers and coaches from the Southeast Missouri Soccer Club to see what it takes to be a part of their teams. These teams are based out of Cape Girardeau, but they will have girls rostered from as far away as 90 miles, maybe more.

Two of the SMSC teams will travel this fall to play in the Metro league in St. Louis. The SMSC teams will play nationally ranked teams in this league; the SMSC '90 Bumblebees played last year and faired very well. In 2001 they finished second in the State Cup behind a Busch team from the Metro league. Other teams will play in a Southern Illinois league, which had the SMSC '91 Sweepers finish first last year. Another SMSC '91 team, the White Tigers, finished with a good showing finishing in the middle of the pack.

SMSC '89 finished near the top in their age division. As it stands now, the SMSC '90 Bumblebees and the SMSC '91 Sweepers will be going the Metro League in their respective age groups. The SMSC '91 White Tigers and SMSC '89 will be playing in Illinois. These teams train with a professional trainer, twice a week. Some of the teams even have a coach assigned to them, to compliment the training during games.

The meeting will take place July 2nd in the First Baptist Church gym on North Main in Sikeston at 7:00 PM. Anyone from the surrounding area is welcome to attend. The trainers and coaches will be there to answer any questions about boys or girls soccer.

The Fas Gas soccer club and the SMSC '90 Bumblebees are sponsoring this informal meeting; a donation of $1.00 per person is needed to offset costs associated with the event.
