John Uptain
CAPE GIRARDEAU - John Dwight Uptain, 80, formerly of Oran, died Dec. 7, 2002, at the Lutheran Home.
Born Feb. 22, 1922, in Clarksville, Ark., son of the late John Wesley and Martha Isabell Boen Uptain, he was a sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II. He served with the 7th Army Division of Reconnaissance and while in the European countries, he was awarded two Bronze Stars. In the summer of 2001, Uptain received a World War II Veteran Recognition Medal. He was a postal clerk for 36 years in the Oran and Cape Girardeau Post Offices, retiring in 1982. A member of Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, he was a 32nd degree mason with Morley Masonic Lodge 184 and received his 50-year pin in 2001. He was also a Scottish Rite 32nd degree in St. Louis.
On June 8, 1952, he married Pat Howell who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, Bryan Uptain of Cape Girardeau; one daughter, Laura Robinson of Fellows, Calif.; three brothers, Claude Uptain of Phoenix, Ariz., James Uptain of Magalia, Calif., and Walter Uptain of Weatherford, Texas; two sisters, Katherine Pearson of Lakewood, Calif., and Betty Kelly of Collinston, La.; and three grandsons, Nicholas Uptain and Clayton Uptain of Cape Girardeau and Ethan Robinson of Fellows.
Six brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. Tuesday until time for a memorial service at 5 p.m. at the Maple United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. The Rev. James Cooper will officiate.
Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel of Chaffee is in charge of arrangements.
